Montante for Maserati 8CTF - Click above for high-res image gallery
When an automaker designs (or at least lends its name to) a bicycle, it serves more than just as a two-wheeled mechanical transport: it embodies what the brand stands for. So when Lexus made one, it was a hybrid. When McLaren did, it was streamlined and made out of carbon fiber. The BMW M division's is made of aluminum and painted matte anthracite, while Audi's is made of wood. (You'd have figured Land Rover's would be a mountain bike, yet it wasn't - but all-wheel-drive champion Subaru's was.)
The latest to join the field is Maserati, which has teamed up (appropriately enough) with Sicilian bicycle workshop Montante on this decidedly retro ride. The 8CTF pays tribute to the eponymous Maserati racer in which Wilbur Shaw took the checkered flag - two years running - at the Indianapolis 500 seventy years ago. The deliciously detailed, made-to-measure bike features only one speed and a single disc brake, and will be strictly limited to 200 examples, each selling for €3,600 ($5,200) through the online Maserati Store.
